2008 Labor Day You Drink & Drive. You Lose

Impaired Driving Crackdown

August 18 – September 1, 2008

The IDOT/Division of Traffic Safety is happy to provide you with these materials to help project the dangers of impaired driving during the 2008 Labor Day holiday. Please utilize them in a way that best fits your needs…modify them or use them verbatim. They are yours to utilize as you see fit in order to execute an effective public information campaign that puts offenders on notice that their actions are not only serious, but criminal.

Below is a timeline that will maximize the effect of each of the media toolkit components.

August 18-September 1 Utilize the “Labor Day 08 Local Talking Points 2.doc” to help in your communications with media and the public during the impaired driving crackdown

August 18-August 24 Utilize the “Labor Day 08 Local Letter to Editor Template 2.doc” to put together a letter to the editor. Distribute the letter to local newspaper(s) in your area

August 18-August 27 Utilize the “Labor Day 08 Local News Release Template 2.doc” to put together a news release announcing your department’s upcoming, stepped-up impaired driving efforts. Distribute your news release to media in your area. Ideally, hold a news conference and invite the media so you are available to comment on the upcoming crackdown.

September 2-September 8 Utilize the “Labor Day 08 Post News Release Template.doc” to put together a news release announcing your department’s citation numbers for the impaired driving campaign. Distribute your news release to media in your area and be available to answer any follow-up questions the media may have.
