The National Work Zone Awareness Week will be observed, April 7-11, 2008. During this week IDOT, along with other Illinois Work Zone Safety Partners, will be holding multiple events to help raise work zone awareness as highway construction season kicks off.

In Illinois, there is an average of over 7,000 crashes in highway work zones every year. In 2007 there were 21 motorists and 2 worker fatalities in Illinois work zones.

On Monday, April 7, 2008 Illinois Work Zone Safety Partners will be distributing work zone ribbons and brochures to their employees.

On Tuesday, April 8, 2008 Press conferences will be held throughout the state to raise motorists’ awareness and urge them to be alert and slow down in work zones.

On Friday, April 11, 2008 Various Rest Areas throughout the state will have displays set up to promote and distribute work zone safety awareness information to highway motorists. Information being distributed includes Work zone lapel pins, work zone brochure, and various fact sheets.
