HISTORY OF MAPPING AT
THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

The Illinois Department of Transportation has a long and rich tradition in mapping and cartography. The department started roadway map production in the early 1910s and now prepares and distributes over 2,000 maps including the Illinois Official Highway Map, 102 County Maps, 18 Supplemental Maps, 112 Township Maps, and 1200 City Maps. These maps provide the base for a multitude of other informational maps detailing such items as traffic and roadway functional classification.

The department routinely distributes map updates to state agencies, local agencies, libraries, mapping companies and the general public.

The department has developed maps around three broad aspects: content, the information the map contains such as highways, railroads, waterways; style, the manner in which information is portrayed such as line weights, symbology, and text fonts and sizes; and geometry, the principles of measurement which govern the location of all geographical points on the map.
