Diversity Awareness
One definition of diversity is simply “variety”. IDOT seeks to
value all segments of people in the economic and social domains. A diverse
workforce includes people from various classes, race, ethnicity, age, gender,
physical abilities, sexual orientation, religions, educational backgrounds and
geographical locations. Equal Opportunity Employment and Affirmative Action
programs cannot create a diverse environment on their own. Building alliances
across differences, increasing awareness and working together to overcome
obstacles in business, the community and personnel practices are also needed to
create diverse environments. To have a diverse workforce in the future a
comprehensive plan is needed to engage young scholars through engineering
activities, mentoring and scholarship opportunities.
Many IDOT
programs will focus on females and minorities in the field of Civil Engineering.
We hope you enjoy browsing the IDOT Diversity Page. Here is a little of what you
will find…
Kids Corner will take young scholars (and their parents) on a journey to help
them see how important civil engineers are to our society. For some fun
learning experiences you can gain access to a few exciting math and science
focused games.
Scholarships link gives information on the IDOT Civil Engineer Scholarship
program.
Transportation in the Classroom is a section that explains how IDOT is involved in communities
throughout the state in mentoring activities.
